Speaking Streetluge
- ABEC
- Manufacturer rating of bearing quality
- air brake
- Using wind resistance to slow down, i.e. sitting up.
- amped
- To be filled with the adrenaline rush that comes with streetluge racing.
- apex
- A corner's tangent, highest point of a curve.
- bacon
- Very rough, hazardous road surface conditions.
- banana
- A 'luge rider who wipes out often.
- brake point
- A reference point a pilot uses to start braking before a turn.
- brake shoes
- Footwear with added rubber on the soles for stopping the street luge effectively with the feet. (see also "quick stops")
- brake turning
- Braking during a turn to slow down, stablize, reduce slide out and to apply more steering to the front wheels.
- buttboard
- Short skateboard-like craft that is used like a street luge. Also called classic luge.
- chucking bales
- Hitting the hay bales (used on tracks as barriers) hard enough to move them.
- CG
- Short for Center of Gravity, an often considered aspect of gravity sporting.
- chicane
- An area of negotiation on the course, sometimes created, to slow riders and increase racer interaction.
- classic luge
- No footpegs, smaller than a streetluge but piloted in the same way. Also known as buttboard.
- constant radius corner
- A corner that has a constant radius through the turn.
- corner entry
- The area between where braking begins and the Apex begins
- course out
- The point where you reach the outer most point on the course exiting a turn.
- decreasing radius corner
- A corner that has a smaller radius in the last half of the turn.
- draft
- Using the pocket of air behind pilots as a high speed racing strategy.
- dropped luge
- A streetluge (or buttboard) with the seatpan lower than the truck mount resulting in a lower center of gravity.
- drop a hill
- Ride a luge course
- dual luge racing
- Head to head competition.
- durometer
- Degree of softness or hardness, refering to 'luge wheels
- flame
- Urethane 'luge wheels actually catching fire as a result of high speed.
- flesh wing
- Extending an arm during a run for balance
- flowing like water
- A fliud, even run down a 'luge course. The ultimate ride.
- gravity sports
- Racing on a downhill track with wheeled sport vehicles power ONLY by gravity. Gravity sports include: streetluge, buttboard, gravity bike, speedboard, downhill inline and skatecar.
- hysteria
- Uncontrolled wobble during a run. Usually results in a wipe out. (see also "speed wobbles")
- increasing radius turn
- A turn were the radius of the first part of the turn is tighter than the second half.
- line
- The optimum path a pilot will take on the course that will produce the fastest speeds.
- mass 'luge
- Racing event featuring multiple racers on the course competing at the same time.
- melt
- Wheels soften from heat of road friction, defective wheels or a little of both.
- nerf bar
- A bumper around wheels, nose and/or pegs to keep streetluge from snagging haybales and other 'lugers.
- pegless luge
- A streeluge design eliminating the footpegs and using calf support instead.
- pilot
- The operator of a streeluge.

- puke a wheel
- To blow up or "melt" a wheel. See "flame".
- push off apron
- Area between the starting line and the begining of the road course where pilots use their hands to develop downhill momentum.
- quick stops
- Rubber soles designed to glue onto footwear to make make "brake shoes" for stopping. (get them at: No Fuel Racing)
- rail
- A streetluge, specifically, a simple design featuring a seat on a beam with footpegs and wheels.
- rafting
- Recovery after an unplanned stop requiring frantic pushing with the hands.
- road rash
- Body burns from scraping the road surface. You try to avoid this.
- seat pan or belly pan
- Part of streetluge that holds body of pilot, usually includes any handholds.
- scambled eggs
- Bad road surface. Not as bad as "bacon".
- screaming mimis
- Unhealthy sounds from a 'luge during a run.
- scrub
- To lose speed by breaking traction or sliding through turns.
- shut down area
- The length of course after finish line for slowing 'luge to a stop.
- skateluge
- Sit style downhill 'luge. Slower but safer, easier to ride and more maneuverable.

- skeleton
- A face first, on your belly gravity powered joyride.
- sled
- A land luge racing vehicle. Also known as a streetluge, roadluge or just 'luge.
- snag
- Streetluges that get hooked together during a run.
- slingshot
- Like motor sport racing, the art of using lead pilot's draft to pass on straight section down through a curve.
- speed mooch or mooch
- bumping another pilot to get more speed.
- spew
- A blown wheel. (see "melt", "puke a wheel").
- speed wobbles
- Uncontrolable wobbling or shimmying during a run. (see "wobbs", "hysteria")
- splitter
- Device attached to axle to add an extra set of wheels to the skate truck. Increases traction during turns.
